چکیده
This paper provides a critical analysis of the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS) deployed at Tecnosol Comércio e Serviços Ltda., partner of Holdercim Brasil S.A, a cement group. The main activity of Tecnosol is co-processing industrial waste in the synthesis kiln at the Alvorada cement plant, in the municipality of Cantagalo, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The purpose of co-processing industrial waste in cement plants is to use the waste as fuel in synthesis kilns and mix it with the clinker in the cement production. This paper describes the EMS installation and discusses the difficulties found during the deployment of the system, the opinion of the employees regarding the company’s environmental agreements, the practical results of the installed system and an assessment of the occupational health and security issues in the Environmental Management System.

Emissions study of co-firing waste carpet in a rotary kiln.
Post-consumer carpet represents a high volume, high energy content waste stream. As a fuel for co-firing in cement kilns, waste carpet, like waste tires, has potential advantages. Technological challenges to be addressed include assessing potential emissions, in particular NO emissions (from nylon fiber carpets), and optimizing the carpet feed system. This paper addresses the former. Results of...

In this article we discuss the development of hazardous waste co-incineration in cement kilns in Brazil as well as its impacts on health and the environment. Information was gathered through an extensive review on social and environmental impacts of co-incineration, and case studies, chosen after discussion with social movement representatives concerned with the co-incineration issue and relate...
متن کاملFormation, release and control of dioxins in cement kilns.
Co-processing of hazardous wastes in cement kilns have for decades been thought to cause increased emissions of PCDD/PCDFs--a perception that has been evaluated in this study. Hundreds of PCDD/PCDF measurements conducted by the cement industry and others in the last few years, on emissions and solid materials, as well as recent test burns with hazardous wastes in developing countries do not sup...

Cement kilns firing hazardous waste are explicitly mentioned in the Stockholm Convention as an "industrial source having the potential for comparatively high formation and release of these chemicals to the environment". The substitution of fossil fuels with alternative waste derived fuels is a well-developed practice in a number of countries. In the European cement industry about 6 million tonn...
متن کاملPerspectives and limits for cement kilns as a destination for RDF.
RDF, the high calorific value fraction of MSW obtained by conventional separation systems, can be employed in technological plants (mainly cement kilns) in order to obtain a useful energy recovery. It is interesting and important to evaluate this possibility within the general framework of waste-to-energy solutions. The solution must be assessed on the basis of different aspects, namely: techno...
